June,

Its great to hear things are working out and that the police department was not only able to assist you, but quickly got things going. It's also good to hear that the community banded together to assist you with this since in the long run it can affect us all.

Things are different now. Until now it seems that domain theft's punishment was mainly a slap on the wrist and some fines, maybe a civil suit. It was still profitable for the thieves to go after high end domains but now, the first one is being fully accountable for their actions and I pray it does not end here. "The law" seems to be taking stolen domain issues more seriously now.

I wish, but no things ain't different really.
That case is particular because of the high profile nature of the domains at stake, and daniel g picked the wrong victims. The owners have been relentlessly pursuing the case but it's been a difficult and frustrating process.

For the small guy nothing has changed. Domains thefts are routinely taking place - one or two have been reported here over the last few days, and once again the victims have little recourse and they won't get VIP treatment.

But we have a nice precedent in the making, may justice prevail :eek:k:

Hi all,
Thank you so much for all your kind words and good wishes! My fervent desire IS to create law that would ease the burden of recovery, but first we must have all states unified to understand that domains are property! Like a house or car, they should be treated as such and rather than receiving a "registration" upon "purchase", I'd like domains to come with a title. I don't know what will happen with my case; I do know and feel good that I persevered to do the right thing for our industry regardless of the financial recovery I may or may not receive. More important, is the standard set by the criminal case; I continue to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies, again with the hope of a successful prosecution.

Although this is a high profile name and case, I am hoping in time to pave the way for the smaller mom and pops out there who don't have the money to go as far as I have. The thieves know this and laugh all the way to the bank while the victim cries with absolutely no recourse. It's incredulous, really. Our registrars should be banning together to fight for us too. There are VERY large players in the registrar game who could have a lot of pull and impact in creating needed laws and policies to protect the consumer. I don't know why this hasn't been done before.

Thanks!
Lesli

BTW, it would be interesting to see this thread moved over to the legal forum! I know it would spark a keen interest. Lesli

I have good news for you, June. Verisign, the registry for .com and .net, plans to introduce "Domain Name Who Was" - a service that will record all WHOIS changes at the registry level, making it easier for owners to track any and all changes to their domains.
