yes exactly the point! When .com started, there was probably hardly any trademarks with COM as a word. There was a probably a few, but not loads. My point is it is less likely for a GTLD to gain mass adoption depending on the tm saturation.

Trademarks and brand protection registrations have been a major aspect of all new TLD launches or relaunches over the past decade or so. The original concept was a grand slam approach where rights holders would protect their mark in all TLDs. However that started to get very expensive. There has been a shift towards enforcement (URS and UDRP) rather than registrering their brands in all TLDs.

As for .XYZ, it has some serious issues to deal with and even though it passed the 100K registrations mark as of this morning's zonefile, many of the registrations may be astroturf registrations rather than real end-user registrations. It may well run into the 57 Channels problem.

For the first time in our history, 101domain is giving away domain names for absolutely no cost to you!​

That turned out to be a braindead decision that the registry should not have made. In the new gTLD web usage survey (top 10 new gTLDs), .BERLIN now has 47.11% PPC parked sites and 20.40% For sale sites. The PPC level on .xyz websites is 90.30%. That's swamping any signs of life in .XYZ as any type-in traffic is probably going to end up on a Netsol PPC parking site.

I quite like .xyz . I think it's quite memorable. I think it could be a good domain to use if you're not sure which domain to use, because it is deliberately vague and non-specific. Like "abc" it's a common phrase.

I agree with Charles. Regardless of the fact that there will be so many new gtlds, not everyone's idea will fit with them. Xyz has the potential to be a catch all for those. Vague but memorable.
