Hi,

sheffield.info
(city, central England, pop 500,000, university, 2x football, etc)

I got an offer of 1,000 uk pounds (about $1,800) [was typo'd $1,8000], should I sell?
What would a good price be?

(I said I would give my answer on Wed 4th Feb.)

Thanks,
Will

update: trying out sheffield.info in Domains for Sale forum but closes 5pm GMT Wed. I'll report back when all is done.

Ask for 2000 UK Pounds. Settle for anything he offers .

Wow - 1k for a .info? Take the money and run!

Seriously though, quote him some number more - if they offered 1k, they are willing and able to pay more. If it's an enduser I'd double or triple it and give justification. Hard to justify high prices on a .info though (IMHO).

icehole - $18k must have been a Freudian typo, thanks

URLtrader and Nameable - thanks for the advice...
I gave away my minimum price (doh, but there were circumstances), so asking for higher isn't really on. I've tried to find higher offers, with no luck so far. I don't mind selling for £1k (though I'm not fussed if it ends up a no sale). I'll report back tomorrow.

Great, sounds like you know what you're doing. I'll look forward to reading the outcome.

Good luck!

If you feel like you got a good offer to start, you could try to ask for up to 50% more and settle for anything he offers in return. There's probably a lot of cliche's to fit, but, a bird in the hand is worth more than 2 in the bush, and I think I recently learned that lesson the hard way.

Best of Luck to you!

Thanks Rob - I agree with the 50% idea but it's panned out over a month - this particular offerer wouldn't like it. I said I'd sell to the highest offer, so I'll stick to that (I should have pointed this out first post, I didn't guess this forum would be so helpful!).

BTW I've just paid my platinum and put it up on Domains for Sale forums (Fixed Price and Auction) - 20 hours to go. So I'll know the score tomorrow.

Cheers,
Will

A place name .info (with half a million population) could get better than a couple of thousands (US$) with the right end-user buyer. But as the others have mentioned, a bird in the hand is always better than whatever in the bush; not a bad deal unless you decide to hang on much longer. Good luck.

Nameslave (hi, like your posts) - Thanks, glad I'm not the only one who thinks placename.info is solid. How about letting the chick peck around in the bush for a couple of years until it's grown into a decent sized xmas dinner!

I've tried to find end-users (sheffield sites, etc), but it seems UK isn't too aware of placename value, yet. And it's .info.

But yes, no harm in having cash in the bank - to take a non-paying contractor to court (for £8k5). I've got other domains that I can leave in the bush, or develop.

Update...

No higher offers were received, so the original offer was accepted. (I don't want to be more specific than that cos it's by contract not escrow, some discretion might be expected.)

I'll confirm here if it goes through fine, or not.

Cheers for all the advice folks.

Belated Update ...

Buyer withdrew the offer. Very annoying to be messed about (time wasted, but not too bothered about the sale). Offer was by email only, buyer was legit, but unlike an escrow bid, I couldn't do much about it.

Hey I live in Sheffield! Population is 550,000+ (roughly) and is a very busy City, I thought the name would be worth more than that.

Shi* -- sorry to hear that -- I would have said take the grand and run from the start. I just got let down on a low $xx,xxx offer to buy spacetrips.com so I'm not too happy either. Hi Rich, by the way! :)

Don't worry about the SpaceTrips.com let down, that name will be worth top dollar whether it be next year or next decade :) (hopefully)

Hi Rich,

Thanks, I feel better about the lost sale. I think it's solid and .info will grow, would like to develop it someday.

Hi again aZooZa,

Sorry to hear, I've found buyers to be very tricky. I've been learning through mistakes and irritations.

I think 1000ukp was fair, but opinions vary.

Thanks,
Will

Hi Temporal:

I note these .INFO CITY sales are indicated at http://www.dnjournal.com/domainsales.htm

1. NewYork.info $28,086
4. Tampa.info $10,000
4. Moscow.info $10,000 (tie for 4)
7. RioDeJaneiro.info $9,000
13. Vancouver.info $6,378
20. Minnesota.info $5,000
27. Houston.info $4,000
27. Washington.info $4,000 (tie for 27)

Source: dnjournal.com

Your city domain will not lose value, don’t worry. Resellers who typically respond to Please Appraise requests don’t live in your city. Resellers narrowly think value in metrics such as Overture Bids or traffic. That is totally irrelevant to your most likely end-user, your next door neighbor.

The likely end user is someone who lives in Sheffield who doesn't know of Overture or DNforum. What they see day and night is:

Sheffield Pizza, Sheffield Cleaner, Sheffield Grocery, Sheffield TV, Sheffield Pound, Sheffield Police, Sheffield Cat Sitters, Sheffield this, and Sheffield that.

They have heard that Sheffied.com is worth $xx,xxx.

Now you give them the hope of getting it all with Sheffield.info! Tell them to make an offer under $xx,xxx for Sheffield.com, org, or net – a reply is unlikely.

Don’t sweat, you are in command.
