Unbelievable Response to a Domain Offer

Hello again,

Thanks for all the thoughts guys. The truth is I don't think 1K is a bad starting point or a "low ball" offer for any two word domain. Surprisingly I've picked up some XXX,XXX level domains for around 1K and some for a couple hundred that eventually sold in the XX,XXX range. This said, why in the world would I send an initial offer of 5K for example. Also it is just that... a starting point. I have paid in the XXX,XXX range for domains that I sent an initial offer of $500. No joke!

Price aside above all I did nothing to provoke this guy and was completely professional. His response is completely unprofessional and shows that he has poor character and as someone else suggestion he is likely on the uneducated side.

Another thing if he really does not want offers he can note "(Not For Sale)" in the whois area. This clown probably thrives on sending out these type of responses.

Otherwise, it is one thing to get offers but it is insulting to get some offers from "educated" domainers.

If someone knows how to access a WHOIS to look up the information themselves, chances better than 50/50 that they are a domainer.

It's common to simply not respond to lowball offers ... particularly for a premium domain. You run the risk of not being taken seriously if you start out low. None of us would be receptive to someone saying "I'll give you $1000 for your 2008 Lexus". You'd look at the person as either a smart*ss or just weird.

However, totally agree that the guy was an incredible jerk, very immature response. What a shame when he/she has a domain you're interested in buying. That volatile temper can lead to all kinds of weirdness before the sale closes.

He send me an initial response of only: "LOL"

I responded saying I had plenty of money and this was simply an initial offer. His recent email is stunning! (see below)

Maybe just a counter offer of 100k in his own unique style, no big deal. The second reply possibly with a hint of what he expects to achieve for the domain, "1/100 of its value". Also the WANT in uppercase, maybe another hint. Quite a lot of info in his reply. If you really want the name, and if you have 100k budget, better to get that reply than no reply at all.

That kind of response is just absurd. For all the people saying that the initial offer was 'insulting'...how is it insulting? Did he give birth to the domain, did he paint the domain, did he create the alphabet that makes up the domain???

It's a name - one he was simply lucky enough to have the foresight to register before somebody else did. It doesn't give him the right to talk to people like that and look down on all the 'idiots' trying to get something for nothing. If he has no interest in selling it, then why isn't it just under private registration?

He's an idiot. How does he know that he just turned away a buyer who would have bought 3 more of his names for 7 million? He doesn't.

Can you tell us some of the xxx,xxx domains you have bought for a grand? I highly doubt it.

Anyone wanting to have success with sending inquiries, I highly suggest you DO NOT follow this advice. Unless you want the same replies replies back that this guy gets.

99% of the email offer that i get on my domains are from lowballers and they would not pay the fair market price even in their dreams so i understand the frustration.

Did the Offerer really think it was cool to offer $1000 for clothingstore.com?

Not to insult owners with unsolicited offers, ignorantly or not, I simply send an e-mail asking If the domain is for sale and What are their price expectations.

If one really wants the name and is a player, then they can start negotiating from the owners reply price. If one does not have the $ to buy the name in the first place, at or around the owners price expectations* then yeah, stop wasting everyone's time. (*Note: As long as Price Expectations are around Fair Market Value that is, and not overly inflated.)

I find not insulting the owner increases my chance of getting the domain I want.
(...but maybe that's just me.)

Personally, I just don't respond to low-ball offers. I don't have time to reply with my price to 100 low-ballers on the off chance 1 may result in a sale to a real businessperson.

IMO, low-ball offers are like spam -to most recepients, it is a waste of time, but to most senders, it can result in 1 sale, and that's enough to justify wasting everyone elses time.

I'm all for taking the gloves off on spamming lowballers. When you've owned domains long enough, you can smell the difference between an offer yet to blossom, and a weed. Time and time again these guys are cycling through a domainers portfolio with pointless offers and inquiries. It gets old.

I only respond to offers that are more than my price expectations then negotiate down to ensure that the "buyer" gets a fair deal.

Strangely- I get very few offers!
