In order to make good money with a forum or any site really, you need traffic. If the traffic is there, try adding a portal like vbadvanced and creating a box with AdSense or slipping the ads between posts or the header and footer of the forum. Im sure DNF is making good money but I feel it is mostly due to the traffic not necessarily how the information is displayed.

I am pretty sure there are some vbulletin-related forums where users of vb post links to thier forums. Try vbadvanced.com or vbulletin.org forums.
