If you want to learn one platform that can be used to build any kind of website then Drupal is a great choice. The variety of free modules is unmatched.

I used Joomla in the past but turned to Wordpress. Joomla is suitable for beginners too but a bit more complex compared to Wordpress. Both have nice plugins, many professionals use Wordpress. At the end it doesn't really matter which CMS you use as long as its output in terms of proper coding and on page SEO is good and what works for you.

I still use netscape composer (1998), lol and I use cutehtml to edit the code.

Wordpress is good for simpler sites and very easily customizable.

Joomla may be better for more involved sites but very hard to customize and not very good overall.

My preferences:

1. Wordpress (for simple projects and domain mini sites, it's what i use with a bunch of SEO plugins and theme customizations. Google for Wordpress Tutorials as a start)

2. Joomla (For more complex websites, that require more organization on content and to be more flexible if i want to give more potential and more features in the future.)

Interesting - after about 3-4 years of struggling with Pligg ; keeping it secure and somewhat spamfree... and having relatively decent success with only 1-2 sites we're about to move the last couple to WordPress.

We run puebla.org (on sale here on DNF) on Pligg, but I'm confident we can triple the daily traffic by migrating to WordPress. The initial appeal of Pligg was for the crowdsourced rating & comment modules, but that's all pretty much available in WP today - not to mention hugely simpler management of upgrades and add-ons...

I am using joomla for parking service and a website, examples www.acknowledgement.com, www.beachmaster.com, www.ITrescue.com, etc. updated automatically through www.king.net news feed.

I am still testing the wordpress for www.webew.com to convert some domains using this service.

You may also use Google sites for your domain name website. It takes some time ... but worth it.

I suppose if you are building your own private web site that is good idea to use web applications like Joomla.
But when we are talking about business site that worth to hire web designer even if you are using web applications.
Business web site should be unique
