I'm not very familiar with the drop process.

I've seen this a few times.

at the top, it says:

Record created on.......: Jan 28, 2002
Record last updated on..: Jan 31, 2003
Record expires on.......: Jan 28, 2003

but below is says:

Status: REGISTRAR-HOLD
Updated Date: 30-jan-2003
Creation Date: 28-jan-2002
Expiration Date: 28-jan-2004

Which exp. date is real, and when is the drop, relative to the exp. date? Thanks!

Hmm... Was that domain already registered after it expired in jan 2003?
I'm trying to understand why you said it will expire in 2004?

The top is the original created information for that domain. At the bottom is the current status of that domain. When a domain goes on hold status the time it drops depends on the register. The domain you were looking at has been registered for another year by the current owner while it was in hold status!

So, if Registry's expiration date differs from Registrar's expiration date (1 year difference), then the domain will not be dropped?

Or it is still possible that Registrar will release that domain and it will be dropped soon?

The domain expired jan 28 2003. As soon as the domain passes the expiry date it is extended one year automatically and the $6 fee is billed by the registry to the registrar. The registrar then has 45 days to delete it and recover their $6.

The clue here is the status. If the domain had been renewed it would read Active if it is still in the expired stage it has a registrar hold on it.

This one has a registrar hold and is therefore still expired.

So here's an interesting one - I'm hoping to "snap" it in the next few days:-

Created On:16-Oct-1996 04:00:00
Last Updated On:07-Feb-2003 09:16:24
Expiration Date:15-Oct-2006 04:00:00

Status:CLIENT HOLD
Status:pENDING DELETE

That's interesting!
Registry expiration is in 2006...
Does it mean that the client extended his domain up to 2006, but didn't pay and now Registrar is deleting it (without holding it for 45 days)?

I'm guessing that one was a 10 year reg. And the whois info is not in order. they're now deleting it.

the pending delete is a verisign registrar code. Yet there shouldn't be anything in the pending delete code yet.

The client hold is not an official code and must have been input by the registrar.

All in all a very interesting mix. I would appreciate you sending the name to me by PM. I'd like to follow this one.

It could also be a registrar that is inputing/using codes incorrectly.

Enjoy!

Useful script, however seems to be unable to read the .org registry, probably due to the recent problems - shows all .org domains I've checked as available when they are not.

Very useful for .com/net though.

So a domain with expiration date on 5 feb 2003 according to NSI(registrar) and 5 feb 2004 according to internic with status active, is useless to hold a snap on?

I wouldn't be that fast to take it off. It does take a few days for status's to change. It is expired. But hasn't been tagged as such. NSI hasn't updated it yet. Active simply means the name servers have not been removed yet. Wait and see if it renews or goes into the registry hold status.
