Of the content management systems mentioned there I think Drupal is the best for most purposes.

Well, WordPress is a CMS too -- and an excellent one, that is. =)

i'm a big joomla fan - but have been contemplating testing out drupal. anyone know how the core drupal install is in terms of SEO? i don't want to necessarily spend a lot of time hunting down a bunch of extensions and plugins since i've pretty much dialed in my joomla installs.

Drupal is excellent for SEO.

Try this site.

You need some basic modules and modification of your robots.txt file. It's also good to use a custom front page and not the default "last 10 posts" view.

Basic SEO modules needed:
pathauto: creates URLs based on your criteria (e.g., post title, post number, or whatever you want)
global redirect: no configuration required -- just install it
page title: allows you to override the default <title> so that your <title> elements are different than your <h1> elements.
meta tags module: Automatically generates meta descriptions for your posts (or allows custom override)

Interesting article as it mentions others I have not heard of. I think any CMS is at first intimidating and most have steep learning curves. I did manage to teach myself Joomla in a couple of weeks.

A previous poster mentioned Joomla and all the refinements and tweaks and plug-ins. SEO is important:

One common problem that Users have with Joomla is that it does not creat search engine friendly urls by default even though there are number of 3rd party extensions for it (Joomla 1.5 will fix this issue and have sef urls by default).

On my site I installed such a plug-in that auto indexes everything on the site and is very Google search friendly, as well as Yahoo.

Will Drupal have a similar plug in or extension?

EDIT:

Okay, answered my post.

Bookmarking the hell out of all these references.

Will Drupal have a similar plug in or extension?

A quick overview of Drupal's URL structure:

Drupal default URLs:
http://example.com/?q=node/123

Drupal "clean URLs":
http://example.com/node/123

Drupal comes with clean URLs. If your host supports them, just enable them in the control panel.

Drupal Path Module:
http://example.com/your-custom-title

The Path Module comes with Drupal. Just enable it in Admin -> Modules. It allows you to create a custom URL for each node ("page") on the site. The Global Redirect Module (mentioned above) will automatically create a 301 redirect from http://example.com/node/123 to http://example.com/your-custom-title

Drupal Pathauto Module:
http://example.com/automatic-page-title

The Pathauto Module expands the features of the Path Module by making the custom URLs automatic. You can base the URL generation on the post title, post ID, category, category path, or many other aspects of the node ("page").

For example, if you had a site about cars and wanted URL structure like http://example.com/dealers/los-angeles/ferrari -- Drupal could create that automatically for you based on the taxonomy ("categories") you chose. See this Drupal taxonomy tutorial for details on how to set it up.

Technically WP isn't a CMS... It's close, but it's missing a couple of components... But for all practical purposes it is.

Control Nuke has very google friendly boosting search result content Google updaters for keywords, updated keyword related content, index sentences, and edited articles. I did one on the Fiji season of Survivor and it took off.

It gets closer with every release; 2.7 is a solid move in that direction.
