What are your thoughts on .tv? Will the .tv extension take off?

I hope so. Despite some fairly negative comments I've seen about the .tv extension, it seems inevitable to me that internet television will explode in a totally massive way over the next ten years, making .tv the obvious choice.

Speaking as a web developer of some 8 years, I have seen internet trends come and go, but I am certain that by 2010, the .tv extension will obliterate .com in the public psyche for anything tv related.

All the best .com names were bought 10 years ago, and most have since been sold between rich people in private, sometimes public, sales. Very rarely do we ever see an amazing domain name on an expired list, and if there is one, 99% of the time it's snapped up by Ultsearch et al.

I for one, believe the hype. In 10 years, the face of the internet will change and .tv will be massive.

I bought sportscaster.tv recently.
I envisage that this will one day be a big website (maybe the biggest on the internet) for real-time sportscasts.

Any thoughts on .tv would be cool. I've seen lots of things said by the by, but rarely seen the subject tackled head-on.

"What are your thoughts on .tv? Will the .tv extension take off?"

Personally, I don't think it ever will ... because of the fact that ".TV" is really only short for the tiny isle of Tuvalu. It's NOT TV as in "television"! So, no, I don't believe "... making .tv the obvious choice." Think of the other extensions, .COM, .NET, .ORG, and yes, even .US ... they actually stand for something other than a tiny isle.
Compare those with .WS (supposedly for "Website"), .CC, .BZ. This latter category includes the lowly .TV! Good Luck.

There are actually 2 factors to consider here. I agree with the points made by CoolHost and would like to add that registry problems and high charges have not helped it get started.

The other factor is that we may not have TVs as such in 10 years. As computers, cable transmission, videophones and other devices start to integrate, will there still be room for a large single function display unit. It may well be that TV's more common meaning will be trans-vestite.

you also have to remember that the .tv extension is handled by the country for which it is a designated ccTLD (Tuvalu). there is always a chance that they give up on the extension altogether due to low uptake/popularity of names.

Very good points also by DomainPairs and Ciqala!
In the end, I think, to date, we all agree with Ed30.
Thanks for starting the thread ... and Good Luck.

If you have rarely seen this subject tackled head on here then you have never used the site's Search function. .TV and the other minor 3rd world country code domains have been discussed here over and over again.

The subject has always been tackled head on - no one pulls any punches. I would say at least 95% of those who have posted believe that .TV is a poor investment with little chance of widespread acceptance.

I think the growth of major country codes like .de, .co.uk and .us will hurt .tv even more as people realize that it does indeed represent nothing more than the island nation of Tuvalu. Using .tv domains will leave surfers with the impression that you have a business based in Tuvalu. I can't see how that would be beneficial in any way.

Still no one can forecast the future for certain so you may have a shot!

The drawback of .tv or any other ccTLD is that policies might change due to political instability. And starting a coup in a small country like Tuvalu (where is it anyway?) could be more affordable than buying out a Fortune 500 company.

If any ccTLD has a chance of making it big, I would say it would be .TV. Yes, I know .TV is Tuvalu and not television, but .tv is always related to television, no matter what the country code is. . .

I am NOT betting on TV. I have none in my portfolio. I merely think if a ccTLD has a chance at being big, I think it is .tv. . .

Without a single .TV in your portfolio, in your opinion .TV stands the best chance of making it big?? Bob, certainly you are one of my fav's, but you sort of contradicted yourself in this statement. I would figure you'd own a bunch of .TV's if this were truly the case. Yes? No? Good Luck :)

PS. I realize you're not BETTING, but ... ummm ... then why? Just curious I guess. Thanks.

Bill : "I'm Going home to watch sport on TV"
Mike : "You're going home to watch sport on Tuvalu? What do you mean?"
Bill : "No, I meant I'm going home to watch sport on transvestite"

You ask anyone on the face of the Earth what the letters TV mean to them, and you wouldn't be surprised to hear that not one of them says"Tuvalu". Even if these people knew about the Tuvalu suffix thing, do you think they'd care? Will the visitors to the website care that Sports.TV contains a foreign suffix? No way! In 5 years, people wanting to watch sports live on the internet will be typing in sports.tv.

Verisign own .tv (since December 2001) and as such I can't envisage any problems ocurring which might upset the political or administrative status quo.

You don't have to look far to find things like : http://www.monyana.com/

In 5-10 years time, you'll all be kicking yourselves!:D

Perhaps we will! Or, perhaps we'll be tuning in to "SportsTV.com" ... only time will tell. Heck, I hope everyone wins! Thanks for the input (I love .TV talk). Good Luck.

All domainers know that .tv is ccTLD and represents Tuvalu island. However, not a single general web surfer knows what the ccTLD is and that .tv is Tuvalu.

The first think that comes to their mind when they see cable.TV is that it's a new extension which has something to do with television or entertainment industry. UPN9.tv is a good example used of .TV. The .TV corpation try to marketing it that way and it will be that way. How effective and how fast to make .TV known to consumers will depends on how good their marketing campaigns are. But, until now, they're not very aggressive.

There are two problems for .TV; first, not many people use internet to watch TV yet; second, the registration fee is high. It's not worth paying when the .TV corporation doesn't put money to advertise its product to consumers.

The actual reason that domain speculator doesn't believe in .TV is because they can't afford to hold the high-quality names to resale, then they registered the low profile ones e.g. e-xxxxx.tv, i-xxxx.tv and can't resale. So .TV isn't a favorite one for domain speculators.

To answer the question, will it take off? It's all depend on .TV corporation. If they're aggressive in advertising and marketing, it may take off. If not, then no.

Unlike .tv, .biz will take off on it own. Biz is a slang used in business world for quite sometime. People who do business will use .biz and they're much more than people in the TV industry. When they can't get .com, they will pick .biz. When they have .com, they will reg .biz to protect the brand and prevent cybersqautters. Thus, .BIZ will create consumer awareness by itself. in the future, .biz will increase in value. On the other hand, .org will be decrease its value. .NET is uncertain, but in the future, the extension will have more meaning than in the past because ICANN is now trying to differentiate the web site by its extensions, that's why they come out with so many varieties.

Anyway, they can't issue another .TV as gTLD for sure.

I think for now, those after a quick buck should look carefully at the remaining generic .tv domains that aren't overpriced e.g. one of their crazy-legs-crane premium names movies.tv is up for grabs at a bargain $250,000.

On the other hand, I bought cult.tv on November 11th for $2000 (4 year registration) and subsequently sold it to Cult TV magazine in the UK for the eqivalent of $5000, making a profit of $3000, less than a month later. Cheap generic .tv names are to be found right now, and some of them are highly desirable.

Bankable, too. Within a couple of years, I reckon the reg prices will fall, loads more .tvs will be reged, and value of these names will start going up fast. Not any old crap though, obviously. I mean, potatoslices.tv isn't going to be a winner, but news.tv would be pretty amazing.

There won't ever be competition for .tv in terms of internet tv though.

I think that it may be possible that ".WEB" could eventually compete ... afterall, it IS WEB TV. Food for thought, have a great night!
Good Luck.

CoolHost, you're welcome.

j8jweb,

Like I said, the investment is not worth it. You regged cult.tv for $2000 and sold for $5000. What happen if you can't sell?

You regged a .info/.us for $20, you may sell it for $200-$2000. If not, you lose $20. See the different??? Nobody would buy a lottery at $2000 in hope to win the first price of $50,000.

---------------------

An example of .TV case, last month, my friend wanted to reg domains for his company, he picked .com, .net, .org and .ws. I told him to remove .ws, he asked me why because he understood that .ws stands for .website.

People doesn't care gTLD/ccTLD, their knowledge always come from marketing/advertising.

No, thank YOU! First for all of the insight, and secondly ... I got my avatar (finally) :)
Seriously though, I do like to hear about .TV's because, to me, the future looks pretty grim ... and I do agree that the registrar's marketing is pretty poor. This COULD change ... who knows!?
Good Luck.

.TV is the ccLTD of Tuvalu? Wow, I almost fotgot that and most of my web visitors don't even know the fact.
Well, I must have a claim on my frontpage to clarify , this .TV is not that .TV the most people thought, tell them the truth when they come to my website plasma.tv that my site is actually a plasma for Tuvalu(what is that and where is it?), I hope I will let most people know .tv is .tuvalu instead of .television, I hope I can do it well :D
And many internet tv sites using .tv like ch5.tv or www.avshow.tv which play audlt content video films on demand, they should confess that they are actually doing business in Tuvalu only.

Within a few years there will be no need to tell them .TV means Tuvalu, it will be common knowledge. Country codes are rising in popularity worldwide. The world's largest market, the United States, just got their own. As the public starts using country codes (The German one is already the 2nd most popular extension in the world and the American one is rising fast), the public will be exposed to what they are and learn what the various extensions stand for.

I don't want to be holding a lot (actually ANY) 3rd world country code domains when this change in perception occurs. It always floors me that people think things are never going to change. Whatever is happening today is how it will always be. That has never been true in human history so I see no reason why the world (especialy the tech world) would stop changing now.
