I find that appraisal of domains is very difficult. If you go just on traffic, you can do a multiple, fine. But most big domain sales are not based on that. One of the best examples that I have seen is iReport.com; that sold recently for $750,000; thats just amazing!

Should we disregard the few huge sales, as flukes? Like winning the lottery? Or are there things to learn from these largest sales?

So how do you appraise my domain GreenBuildings.biz? Normally .biz is not worth much, but green is in, and there is so much work being done on making buildings green. I personally think its a good domain. But a 'domainer' would pay squat, since it has low traffic and is a .biz. And I have foudn that sometimes, members of online forums will purposely appraise domains overly low, as they hope to buy them later at a good price.

But GreenBuildings.biz might pop for an architect, for example.

Another example: there are several beverage domains that sold for 6 and 7 figure prices yet Brews.com is listed right here on dnf for a very low price, IMO. I just dont get it. I dont understand domain valuation.

Men.com sold for a huge price awhile ago, but females.com, I believe it was, just sold on snapnames auction for a five figure price. I dont get that at all, its worth much more. A pure domainer would say no, going just on traffic, but i think those appraisals are just to get deals.

I sold GasolineCreditCards.com easily but no one wants my PetrolCreditCards.com. I dont get it!

I always say that building out is better but its so easy to procrastinate on that.

Opinions?

GreenBuildings.COM is a 5 figure domain, in my book. .Biz is purely speculative, however. There are two ways to look at it: a) you might get an unsolicited offer from a an end user in the space, who might pay a couple grand if he really wants it, b) Even with a .biz the domain stands out and might do well as a developed domain (people see 'greenbuilding.' in Google results and click on it.

There's a reason you haven't sold PetrolCreditCards.com. When's the last time you heard someone in the States call it "petrol". Look at other countries that use the term "petrol"...do they use the term "credit cards" or something else??
