As has been said already, its not too late to see the light.......

It's getting VERY late in the game, as compared to just 3 months ago. Yes, you can still get some quality names - if you do the work, but very few killer terms are unregistered. It's especially hard, today, to find good Japanese IDNs! Anyone wishing to register any new IDNs should not waste another minute. Otherwise, the next-best option is to buy some quality IDNs from the aftermarket, while some resellers are currently selling some at bargain prices.

I agree there are'nt many good Japanese terms left although I am still picking up some good terms, just today as it happens.
Instead of going into a market that has been picked almost clean there are other languages to sift through. Hindi, Thai, Greek etc...
Although I agree, every minute wasted is crucial and if you want those name then you will be paying top dollar to the holders of them......

MY IDN domain traffic doubled today and I think this maybe the reason why thanks for posting this topic I was scratching my head all day about my dramatic change in traffic.

thanks Duck

Whilst stll marked Beta 2, IE 7.0 is actually more or less being pushed as the Internet Explorer for XP!

Go to the main Windows Page

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/default.mspx

Under Technologies You have the Option Internet Explorer (either right or left hand side)

Clicking on this takes you straight to the IE 7.0 Download Page. Only then do you see an Option for IE 6.0, If you click on that the first link you get to is EI 7.0 again!

If from the Windows Page you click the XP Home Page. What do you get? Surprise, Surprise you get IE 7.0.

IE 7.0 is now the De Facto Default Web Browser Option for XP. They really could not be pushing it harder without including it on the Automatic Update Feature.

You are having a conversation with people who have a single name in their portfolio of hundreds if not thousands that would put your entire portfolio to shame.
It doesnt surprise me you want IDN's to fail...

As has been said already, its not too late to see the light.......

thanks for the heads up. I would like to see Your SUPER portfolio of idn-s
But You can register them yourself, I will not do it. Sorry I don`t see the vision. But its just me.

Well, this year so far I have sold $40K worth of IDN. I would expect that to rise in the latter half of this year, before the traffic revenues means that actually selling domains comes off the Agenda for good!

I have personally have no real objection to you being obdurate, as descenters like yourself are now a small minority, which most mainstream domainers are distancing themselves from. Its frankly entirely up to you whether you join The Last Great Domain Goldrush, or simply imprint your thoughts on the community here to the point where you will be held up to ridicule for a generation.

Thats really nice for You. $40k in sales, I can`t compete with that, then again I don`t sell anymore.

Sorry Subber Duck, but I really don`t see how the idn-s can work. i know that german, french and some more IDN-s will work, I see the sales. And We in Estonia also use char like äöüõ in our keyboard, They will work I am sure. But if You have to buy some kind special keyboard, or swich keyboards or something like that, then I don´t really see any use in IDN-s. I think domains where made to make the surfing easyer. We could go back then and start using numbers again (127.01.01.01 or something like that).

But Still there is too much money to make from normal domains.
Looks like I am missing something here, but ok.

Look you are in Estonia right?

Have you ever been to Russia or seen a Russian at his computer?

Do they use a Qwerty Keyboard?

Do Arabs use a Querty keyboard? Well visit a an Arabic Domain Forum and find out? http://www.nameclub.com/

You wll note that virtually the entire content of this Forum is in Arabic. So how exactly do you think they manage to input the Arabic text with a Qwerty keyboard. The only thing of any consequence on the site in Latin Characters is the domain name, so do they need a second keyboard to type that in? Well not exactly because their keyboards will be bi-lingual, but it isn't exactly convenient especially when you have to worry about things like text changing direction (right to left).

Just because you are having trouble visualising all this, it doesn't mean it is not out there. Having said that, in your case I think you would be wise to stay clear of IDN. Like a University education, it probably isn't for everyone!

What cant you see? The fact that someone in (Insert country/Nation of choice) wants to surf the internet in their own language?
English is 4th on the languages table!

Chinese --> 1080 million
Hindi --> 370 million
Spanish --> 322
Then English --> 308 million

So you cant see the fact that 1,772,000,000 people should, by your reckoning, cow down and learn English!
Not gonna happen.....Sheesh!

Hey can I jump in here.
I'm living in Tokyo & working for an SEO/Online marking company.
We just had the largest Search Related even in Tokyo last week.
I asked a few people from Yahoo, Google, & Value Commerce about IDN Domains.
One of the big search engine workers sees it as the search engines will make IDN Domains just like normal domains for Japanese.
Also everyone of them told me they saw IDN Domains as domains that have SEO value for Japanese. ASCII domains do not.

The company I work for has about 40 Japanese employees, many seo consultants all of us have to use the internet most of the day.

Their take is they CAN'T remember ads with normal domains
plus they often spell the names wrong.
Most people that have never seen the way a person uses a Chinese/Japanese often post an opinion that it must be bothersome putting a Japanese word with dot com at the end. As long as IE7 comes out & people can access them they WILL be used. It's absolutely no problem at all to type in the dot com. It takes longer converting hiragana to find the right kanji characters. This is a fact. I use messenger frequently during the day with staff in switching from Japanese to English.

The Tool bar at the type is not used currently is Japan. Everyone just goes to their bookmark of Yahoo or Google & types in katakana the domain they want. I work in the industry over here & it's a fact.

stuff your points are valid concerns but some of us are actually residing in the countries we buy domains for. I haven't gotten up to 40K like RD but the year isn't even half way over...

Ok, i see your point, the issue at hand, isn't so much of switching keyboard - that has never been an issue. Rather, it is how strong the .com extension is for a language.

Here's a Japanese keyboard. Note the Japanese symbols on it. 99.999% of the 80,000,000+ PCs sold in Japan have a similar keyboard by default, out of the box.

You can take it to the bank that no native Japanese speaker here has ANY problem at all typing in Japanese. Heck, even I can get by entering Japanese using only an English keyboard and Windows XP's built-in multilingual capabilities!

Arabic keyboards are similar. Here's an example...

Me too I only have a Qwerty Keyboard. If it where necessary to have a language specific keyboard, I would need at least twenty by now!

I have a further advantage over these guys, because I don't actually read or speak any of these languages, I have never felt at all constained by one language more than another.

Right, they do word processing in foreign characters because .... ?

Don't be such a stubborn ass, people TYPE in THEIR language everyday and it's generally considered troublesome to use latin characters, why ? because :
a) it's a different characterset !
b) you can't spell native terms in other charactersets !

WOW ! :frusty:

Just for the record, China was one of the first places to go IP6 "345.105.105.105.002.001" because of the anticipated number of connections required.

The whole point of IDNs is to make surfer easier to the user. It is being implemented after 10 years of research and development by some of the best brains in the business. I hardly think they are going to do a U turn now simply because someone who cannot hold a coherent argument together says it won't work!

Those who use IDNs won't have to buy a special keyboard, it comes with their PC. Do you honestly think there is a whole junk yard in Beijing of discarded Qwerty keyboards or something?

The ones I am looking forward to seeing are the Indian Keyboards which are supposed to be going to support 12 or more different scripts!

Update:

Actually, it now being pushed on Home Page at the BETA 2 Has all but been dropped.

I just read this whole thread and most of the talks are about arabic and japanese domains and popularity.

What about chinese domains? shouldnt they be the best IDNs to go for? or is the chinese government gonna be a problem?

like if you were to have mortgage.com in chinese or mortgage.com in japanese, which would you choose?

Chinese is big with some of the IDN'ers. I worry about Chinese Government involvement, and I studied Japanese - so I mainly went for Japanese. DCG went for all languages, I believe.
