Escrow or not, that does not 'automatically' clean the buyer. The same person can be on both ends of the deal. Sure, they pay fees for this but if it makes the theft look legitimate, small price to pay.

I have reasons to believe this is not the case, although still Hanson might have been aware of the dubious status of the domain.
