OK, so I just started seeing this whole 3D thing (day late and a dollar short, as usual) and thought maybe I should stock up on some domains but, of course, they were long gone.

And then I did a little research and found something called "S3D".

So what's the difference between 3D and S3D?

Thanks in advance.

Sky launches 3D channel in pubs

The match between Arsenal and Manchester United will be viewable in 3D in pubs in London, Manchester, Cardiff and Edinburgh.

In April Sky will roll out its 3D channel to hundreds of other pubs.
Later in the year, Sky 3D will be made available to all Sky+HD customers with a range of content on offer.

This will include movies, sport, documentaries and entertainment. Viewers need to wear a special pair of glasses to watch the content. There has been a great deal of hype around the technology since cinemas began showing films in 3D. Avatar, shot in 3D, has become the highest grossing film of all time. It is expected that 3D-ready TVs will hit the consumer market later this year.

"People have already embraced 3D cinema and because Sky's 3D service uses the same kind of technology, we're confident there will be demand for sport, movies, concerts and drama in 3D," said Gerry O'Sullivan, Sky's director of strategic product development.
In February, two rugby matches in the Six Nations championship will be filmed in 3D and shown at cinemas around the UK.
The 2010 World Cup will also be filmed in the format

S3D stands for "STEREOSCOPIC 3D" - you might have recognized nobody in this thread is talking about S3D
- but that would be the right description.

We are so much used to call everything 3D....

Thanks Philipp. Based on what I read there is a slight difference in what the viewer actually sees. To use an analogy (and probably mis-using it), 3D is like mono sound for the eyes, while S3D is like, well, stereo for the eyes.

Is this correct?

Couldn't explain any better than you did: >> stereo for the eyes <<

There are different types of 3D. That's why there are at least three different kinds of 3D glasses - anaglyph, polarized and shutter. Stereoscopic 3D isn't different from 3D - it is a type of 3D, more advanced from more primitive forms (such as anaglyph, which uses the old glasses with different colored lenses), but it's all 3D. So people who registered 3D names don't have to worry about S3D eclipsing it. Just be careful that you don't unintentionally register names that refer to backward-looking 3D technology such as anaglph.

Sony to Sell 3-D Versions of Archived Movies as Early as 2010

Feb. 3 (Bloomberg) -- Sony Corp. may start selling Blu-ray discs showing 3-D versions of its archive of movies and videos as early as the 12 months starting April 1.

“We’ll probably be able to start next fiscal year, if we can convert them into 3-D with good effects,” Joe Nakata, a deputy general manager for Sony’s 3-D strategy unit, said in an interview yesterday in Tokyo. “Companies specializing in conversion processes are starting up in India and the infrastructure is getting prepared.”

The producer of “2012” and “Michael Jackson’s This Is It,” aims to take advantage of its archived video content to trigger an expansion of the 3-D technology from cinemas to households. The company plans to start selling 9 models of 3-D Bravia televisions and a Blu-Ray disc player this summer, when it will also enable PlayStation 3 machines to run games in 3-D by updating programs.

Tokyo-based Sony, which projects sales from 3-D products without content will reach 1 trillion yen ($11 billion) in the year to March 2013, is in talks with TV stations and game software makers to add a variety of 3-D content, Nakata said. He declined to comment on Sony’s projection for sales of 3-D content.

The company said last month it will team with Discovery Communications Inc. and Imax Corp. to start a 3-D dedicated TV network in 2011.

Rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co., the world’s biggest TV maker, LG Electronics Inc. and Panasonic Corp. also plan to begin selling 3-D TVs this year.

Valuate says hddvd.com is worth $297,000

HDDVD.com can't be worth anywhere near 300K as it's apart of a dying breed. I suppose 8tracks.com is worth 300K as well.

The 3d TV domains will be in much more value, but as of now, the technology and domain names are just speculation. The chance of 3d television taking off is greater than HD-DVD making a comeback though.
