Maybe at one point the political section served its purpose where forum members could discuss politics like respectable men and women. However, it has become nothing but a distraction, a source of stress, a cesspool and overall I feel it does far more harm to our community than good. Violation of rule #3 is running wild in this section: what message does that send?

In order to keep sending the clear message that DNF is a professional community who works together and takes pride in being the central place for domain discussion, I would like to have it removed or at least provided the ability to block this irrelevant section of our community.

I know there are others who feel the same and I will let them post below.

I'd say, start a new topic every day to counter those silly threads. Base the subject on the following elements:

Obama | Sarah Palin | GW Bush | Liberals | Neocons | Teabaggers

suck(s) | love(s) | hate(s) | guilty of

abductions in the Mauritius | quakes in Peru | fire from the sky | dead birds | yeast infection

etc.

It can be entertaining.

Throw in a few more adjectives and conjunctions, slap them on some dice, and you've got the makings of a new political game.....

We all know that Violation of rule 3 will occasionally happen in Political threads... i don't blame it for happening from time to time..

People have strong opinions and when you get emotionally involved it can lead to this happening.

I strongly believe that political threads are necessary for a forum so they don't spread elsewhere in the forum where they are really unwanted.

Although people think there is no place for them on a domain forum. Believe it or not, it increases traffic to the website. Which potentially can increase sales.

Increase traffic = more $$ for members and of course DNF.

That can be said about a lot of the threads. I find it disturbing that ADULT domains show up in "New Posts" but i am able to get over it.

To me, that's a bigger problem. So what's next? Have an option to opt out of any section we choose? Are we really incapable to ignore?
Uh, yes, the way it's set up right now (as I use iSpy) those political posts are too obtrusive to ignore. Same for adult domain listings. It's like driving down the highway: they don't show hardcore porn terms on billboards, but people who are into that kind of stuff know where to find it. That doesn't mean free speech is dead.

The best solution would be if each user could choose which forums didn't appear on his or her own iSpy / new posts listings. But if that's not technologically feasible, then let's simply "turn off" automatically showing the ones that regularly discomfit a large proportion of members. I nominate politics and adult. (Maybe DNF members should vote?)

Fine then let's have the chance to block them at least. I didn't buy a free membership here and therefore I'm not going to 'just ignore it'. I, and many others, would like the ability to block them. If you want to 'just ignore them' that is your business. Me, I want to the ability to block them.

Obama teabagged Sarah Palin's bush while liberal neocons abducted G.W. in Mauritus while a B52 filled with dead birds were fired from the sky into Rush Limbaugh's yeast infection, resulting in a massive earthquake in Peru.

I say drop the ban-hammer, or drop the section from showing up all the time. It's distracting, and people like 500,000 are clearly nutjobs.

Well, if that can be done great. But no one rammed the membership down your throat. Nothing has changed in Political threads since i have joined here.

It involves a simple forum plugin (there are tons out there) that takes 5 minutes to install that allows members to opt out of forums they want to opt out of.

The "shove it and deal with it" argument is really not a good one.

In the same sense, no one is ramming this thread down your throat. If you don't care, I am not sure what your purpose is to keep posting about how much you don't care lol.

Well that's up to the admins to decide. Your title is more related to closing down the actual thread.

Maybe you should open a new thread about opting out of specific sections. :)

I'm not sure how easy or complex that is.

Who said i was complaining about this thread? I am posting my opinion.

Do you have a link to this plugin for VB4, I have no problem installing it.

I will also look now.

Status?

Also, the section needs to do more than just allowing users to opt out. It does not need to appear on the home page in the Recent Activity Widget. Of the 10 listed, 5 political/controversial threads (including this thread) are showing up on the home page lander.

Not sure that is the message you want to send.

Why get rid of it? If it annoys you guys so much, just ignore it. I know I do.

Exactly.... The reason the OP and some others want to get rid of the Political section is because it's their guy who's getting hammered, Simply put, they cant handle it.

The complaints about flame wars, name calling and all the heat that goes along with that section is just a smoke screen to close the section down..

This the OP''s 2nd or 3rd Thread asking the Forum to censor and close the Political section. And if you look at when her complaining began, it was February of 2009 shortly after Obama was sworn in.

This is not a political forum, it is a domain forum. 99.9% of the people are here for domain related stuff not politics.

In my opinion you have to be a pretty big loser to constantly post political attacks on a domain forum.
Most of the posts on politics eventually evolve into personal attacks on individual members as well.

:) You are awesome!

I found plenty for VB3 but no luck for 4. However, I will look again in the AM.

Thanks so much, Adam.

Let me translate so there is no misunderstanding.

What Doc Com is saying is that taking away a forum section does not silence our Freedom of Speech in the same sense that denying new sub forums does not silence our Freedom of Speech. If I wanted a sub-forum about dogs and the admin says no....that does not silence our Freedom of Speech.

Just like adhering to the forum rules does not silence our Freedom of Speech.
